If I don’t check my garden almost daily, I’d miss some of the amazing transformations the plants go through, like the opening of the lily and ixora I’ve posted. And this gem: the Red Button Ginger, or Spiral Ginger.
Like the (Un)Common Ginger, the Red Button Ginger one also self-propagates, sending up new shoots to invigorate my garden. And I don’t even have to ask! It’s not necessarily a pretty plant, and when the blooms die, even I have to admit that it’s rather ugly. But in the location I’ve planted this one, it fills the bill for me … filling in among my ground cover, a croton or two, and some dwarf split-philodendrons to create a very green, very interesting garden spot.
So this is what I would have missed if I hadn’t checked in often … the beginning of the flowering. A time when they’re at their brightest red.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! Once they’re fully grown, look what surprise they hold in store for us:
These little yellow/orange add-ons pop out from the sides to awe and amaze. These will eventually dry out and fall off, leaving the red bloom in tact until it evenually dries out and I pluck it off.
But see already in the lower right-hand corner. A new bloom is just beginning. Perpetual color!
